Quotes Describing The Victorian Era In Great Expectation Essay Example For Students
Quotes Describing The Victorian Era In Great Expectation Essay GREAT EXPECTATIONS. By Anne Gilmour. November1996. Of the major themes from Charles Dickens novelGreat Expectations to be discussed as to their importanceconcerning its structure, I have selected Love in thecontext of human relationships, Isolation and finallyRedemption. The loneliness isolation brings can only beredeemed by the loving associate of our fellow man, this is atwo way thing. Had grown diseased, as all minds do andmust and will that reverse the appointed order of theirmaker. In isolation the greatest sin we commit againstourselves and others, is to shun human companionship asMiss Haversham did. After her betrayal in love shehardened her heart towards her fellow man. By hardeningher heart and suppressing her naturally affectionate nature, she committed a crime against herself. Miss Havershamslove for Compeyson is of a compassionate kind, this blindedher to his true nature, as Herbert remarked, too haughtyand too much in love to be advised by anyone. AtCompeysons desertion h er anger and sorrow becameextreme and she threw herself and Satis House intoperpetual mourning and a monument to her broken heart, shutting the world out and herself from the world. Her onlyconcession is in her adoption of Estella. Miss Havershamhas ulterior motives in adopting Estella, this is not a lovingaction on her part, but a calculated manoeuvre to turn thechild into a haughty, heartless instrument of revenge againstmen. Estella is encouraged to practice her disdain on Pipand to break his heart. Paradoxically, Miss Havershamsgreatest sin, is against herself. By hardening her heart sheloses her generous, affectionate nature and becomeswithered inside emotionally. Her punishment is that theheartless young woman she has made, uses her lack offeelings against Miss Haversham. Estella herself is isolated,as for most of the novel she takes pleasure in her role ofavenger. Her isolation is in part responsible for Pipssnobbery and his estrangement from Joe and Biddy. LikeMiss Haversham she becomes a victim of her ownmachinations. She enters into a loveless marriage toDrummle, who is cruel to her. This shows that no matterhow heartless one tries to be, there is always someone moreheartless. The instrument of revenge punishes the avengerand is punished in return. Pip feels emotionally andgeographically isolated on his arrival in London. Jaggersisolation is his deliberate rejection to human involvement, hesubstitutes these with the mechanical process of law. Jaggersuses the legal system to avoid personal responsibility for thefate of his fellow man. This profession has imprisoned hisbetter instincts, leaving him isolated within the system. Magwitch, however, is isolated by the system, he uses Pipas his agent of revenge. Magwitchs motives are not onlyrevenge, but also gratitude for the food Pip gave him in hishour of need. He develops a fatherly affection towards Pip,who in the end returns his affection. It is Magwitch who hasthe best reasons for disbelieving in human companionship, that supported it the most. Love in the context of humanrelationships is best shown through Pip. The relationshipbetween Pip and Joe changed as Pip grew up. As a child,Pip regarded Joe as an equal, though he loved him, I had anew sensation of feeling conscious that I was looking up toJoe in my heart. Though there is love, the snobbish Pip iscritical of Joe, not verbally, but in his thoughts. When Pipattains his Great Expectations, he is embarrassed by whathe regards as Joes commonness and avoids his company. .u7b9eaf3fe808d99d18f5a3d777aeea91 , .u7b9eaf3fe808d99d18f5a3d777aeea91 .postImageUrl , .u7b9eaf3fe808d99d18f5a3d777aeea91 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u7b9eaf3fe808d99d18f5a3d777aeea91 , .u7b9eaf3fe808d99d18f5a3d777aeea91:hover , .u7b9eaf3fe808d99d18f5a3d777aeea91:visited , .u7b9eaf3fe808d99d18f5a3d777aeea91:active { border:0!important; } .u7b9eaf3fe808d99d18f5a3d777aeea91 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u7b9eaf3fe808d99d18f5a3d777aeea91 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u7b9eaf3fe808d99d18f5a3d777aeea91:active , .u7b9eaf3fe808d99d18f5a3d777aeea91:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u7b9eaf3fe808d99d18f5a3d777aeea91 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u7b9eaf3fe808d99d18f5a3d777aeea91 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u7b9eaf3fe808d99d18f5a3d777aeea91 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u7b9eaf3fe808d99d18f5a3d777aeea91 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u7b9eaf3fe808d99d18f5a3d777aeea91:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u7b9eaf3fe808d99d18f5a3d777aeea91 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u7b9eaf3fe808d99d18f5a3d777aeea91 .u7b9eaf3fe808d99d18f5a3d777aeea91-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u7b9eaf3fe808d99d18f5a3d777aeea91:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: WEST SIDE STORY IS DIFFERENT FROM ROMEO AND JULIET EssayPips conscience makes him realise, Joe has moregentlemanly qualities than he himself possesses, his remorsehowever is short lived. When Pips fortunes take a fall he istoo ashamed to approach Joe and Biddy, their love is toostrong however and are there for Pip in his hour of need. InPips relationship with Biddy, he is very condescending, andshows disregard for her feelings, If I could only get myselfto fall in love with you, is a prime example. Pip comparesBiddy to Estella and overlooks her obviously good qualities. After his loss of fortune, Pip decides to honour Biddy bymarrying her. I would go to Biddy. Pip still snobbishlythought Biddy would be glad to marry him. However, Biddyhas married Joe. Though she was once half in love with Pip,Biddy recognised his obsession for Estella and wisely soughta partner elsewhere. Biddy and Joe share the same valuesand are ideal partners. Herbert and Clara, Mr Wemmickand Miss Skiffin and Mr and Mrs Pocket have loving steadyrelationships. Pips sexual attraction towards Estella is moreromantic ideology than genuine love. He envisions Estella asa captive princess and himself as the heroic knight, only hecan awaken love in her heart. Even though Estella tells him,I have no heart, he does not believe her. Does Estellabelieve what she says or is she trying to convince herself? Isshe using her unattainability to perversely keep Pipsinterest? Redemption is attained by Miss Haversham whenshe humbles herself to ask Pips forgiveness. After thecruelty she has endured at the hands of Compeyson, Estellaemerges a more compassionate person. Pips forgivenessand love from Joe, Biddy and Magwitch. He endureshardship and triumphantly emerges a mature, thoughtfulperson. The themes of Love, Isolation and Redemption arethe structure the other themes hang from. The loneliness ofisolation is the beginning; love is the food that staves it offand redemption is the final cleansing. Love is the backboneof the novel, the thing that binds the others together, redemption is its conclusion. There has to be love or thecharacters would not be able to interact, if there were onlyisolation each characters tale would be a separate piece ofwork. All good novels have a moral to relate and involvelove and redemption. By Anne Gilmour. All commentswould be welcome as I am studying for exams.

Wilt Chamberlain Essays - Basketball, , Term Papers
Wilt Chamberlain There have been many greats to play the game basketball, but we have never, and maybe never again, see the likes of Wilt Chamberlain. His entire life Wilt Chamberlain made the improbable look routine. No professional athlete in any team sport combined the size, strength, and fluidity of movement that Wilt Chamberlain brought into the sleepy, dimly lit NBA arenas of 1959. I?ll go one step further: No one who has played pro team sports has ever dominated every minute of every game in the early ?60s. His size and strength were sources of wonder not only to paying spectators, but also to his fellow players. Wilt played in the NBA for 14 seasons, from ?59-60 through ?72-73, and he helped the NBA from league of moderate local interest to a major TV attraction. Unfortunately, especially for younger fans, most of the TV tributes following his death showed the Wilt of the early ?70s. Sure, his Lakers teams were great-the ?71-72 team won pro sports record 33 games in a row. But Wilt by then was a much different player than he had been in his younger days. I myself have not seen the real Chamberlain play a number of times, but when I did, it was amazing. Through most of the ?60s, Chamberlain played with strength, speed, and dexterity. His footwork was quick enough to fake out defenders, and he had enough touch to make his finger rolls and fadeaways virtually unstoppable. Of course, no one could repel his moves to the hoop, and even when he was technically boxed out under the boards, he would get his share of reach-in rebounds over the heads of shorter opponents. But in November 1969, he had surgery after tearing a knee ligament. Through diligent rehabilitation, he was able to return to the Lakers at the end of the regular season, and play a full playoff schedule. But Wilt?s style was different after the injury: more mechanical, flat-footed, clearly not as fluid, less certain of his ball-handling skills (Sports Illustrated). It is this Chamberlain whom we see on most of surviving film or videotape. A great player, still, but a much different one-certainly less dominating than the man who terrorized the league in the ?60s. Michael Jordan scored 50 or more points in 30 regular-season games in his career. Wilt Chamberlain scored 50 or more points in 45 games during the ?61-62 season. Twenty-six years after he played his last NBA game, Wilt still holds the league?s all-time single-season records for average points, rebounds, and field goal percentage. Wilt?s second-best season in each of those categories is better than any other player?s best through all of NBA history. Some day, perhaps, everyone will be talking about a player who is the Next Jordan, or the Next Magic, and maybe even the Next Russell. But I do not expect we will ever see anyone that we will call the Next Wilt.

Sample National Junior Honor Society Essay Character
Sample National Junior Honor Society Essay CharacterOne of the first things to consider when writing a sample national junior honor society essay is what character trait you are going to talk about. Some students write 'character' as if it means that they are naturally good people. This isn't true. The character of a student in any honor society is not a reflection of their innate goodness or badness. Honor societies are filled with students that are excellent in so many ways and good in some ways and not so good in others. The way a student is affected by their experiences as they deal with adversity in their lives does not determine their character. Many times it's important to see the character of different characters in order to understand the way that character impacts the behavior and the choices that students make. Let's take a look at the structure of a national junior honor society essay. It should be short and to the point. Just think of how many parts of the essay do you use when you write essays for college and how many do you use when you write essays for other purposes? One of the most basic principle to remember is that you should focus on one aspect of character and let that feature relate directly to the character of the character you are trying to describe. For example, let's look at the characters of Gertrude and Ellen. Let's discuss each character.Ellen is a very successful woman who has a successful career and a stable home life. She is also an able teacher and mother, and she has taken on the role of a close friend to Gertrude. She feels that Gertrude is a very good girl who is responsible and loyal to her friends and to herself. In order to understand this character trait, we need to look at some details about Ellen. She was a successful business woman with a successful career, but she was also very generous with her time and her effort. We'll call this generosity her external character trait. She had enough money to support herself and her f amily, and she was willing to do whatever she needed to help the other characters in her life.Gertrude's character trait is expressed in terms of her internal character trait. She is a bit lacking in physical appearance, but she has a strong character that allows her to overcome these shortcomings. She had previously been a strict disciplinarian and did not have a good relationship with her family. Her external character trait is confidence, which enables her to succeed in her business.Ellen and Gertrude are presented in the sample national junior honor society essay as two examples of characters who have the same basic plot line. They share a connection to charity and friends, and both are concerned with the other's character traits. By using these elements, it is easier to see what character trait is related to what character trait, and how they relate to each other. This will give you the insight you need to write a great national junior honor society essay.

Two Different Views on Love In Christopher Marloweââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Passionate Shepherd to His Love,â⬠(682-3) a shepherd offers a nymph his love. He uses many pleasing things to entice her. He offers her gifts such as ââ¬Å"beds of rosesâ⬠(9) and ââ¬Å"fair-lined slippersâ⬠(15) in exchange for her love. The nymph also seems conceited in the first two lines of the poem. She is saying that she is not young enough to be caught up in material things. The nymph is willing to wait for someone who can offer her more. 9/11 Terrorism Attacks Essay Example for Free
9/11 Terrorism Attacks Essay ? After the September 11 World Trade Center Attacks, America had had second thoughts about their immigration law. On September 11, 2001, four commercial planes were hijacked in the US. Using the planes as bombs, the hijackers flew two into the World Trade Center in New York City; one was flown into the Pentagon in Washington DC, and the fourth crashed in Pennsylvania. Over 6,000 people were killed, most when the World Trade Center collapsed. The FAA immediately grounded all US planes to prevent further attacks. The 19 men who hijacked the planes were foreigners who had been in the US from a week to several years. At least 16 entered at US ports of entry, with student or tourist visas; some of their visas appear to have expired before September 11, 2001. About 40 percent of the 8. 5 million unauthorized foreigners in the US similarly entered with seemingly valid visas, but did not abide by the terms of their visa by e. g. departing within 90 days. (Martin & Martin, October 2001) Our enemies have repeatedly exercised this option of inserting terrorists by exploiting weaknesses in our immigration system. A Center for Immigration Studies analysis of the immigration histories of the 48 foreign-born Al-Qaeda operatives who committed crimes in the United States from 1993 to 2001 (including the 9/11 hijackers) found that nearly every element of the immigration system has been penetrated by the enemy. (Camarota, 2002) Of the 48, one-third were here on various temporary visas, another third were legal residents or naturalized citizens, one-fourth were illegal aliens, and the remainder had pending asylum applications. Nearly half of the total had, at some point or another, violated existing immigration laws. 9/11 was not the only terrorist plot to benefit from lax enforcement of ordinary immigration controlsââ¬âevery major Al-Qaeda attack or conspiracy in the United States has involved at least one terrorist who violated immigration law. Gazi Ibrahim Abu Mezer, for example, who was part of the plot to bomb the Brooklyn subway, was actually caught three times by the Border Patrol trying to sneak in from Canada. The third time the Canadians would not take him back. What did we do? Because of a lack of detention space, he was simply released into the country and told to show up for his deportation hearing. After all, with so many millions of illegal aliens here already, how much harm could one more do? Another example is Mohammed Salameh, who rented the truck in the first World Trade Center bombing. He should never have been granted a visa in the first place. When he applied for a tourist visa he was young, single, and had no income and, in the event, did indeed end up remaining illegally. And when his application for a green card under the 1986 illegal-alien amnesty was rejected, there was (and remains today) no way to detain and remove rejected green-card applicants, so he simply remained living and working in the United States, none the worse for wear. (Krikorian, 2004) Immigration Changes According to Daniel T. Griswold (2002) ââ¬Å"We should not allow the war on terrorism to be hijacked by those who would turn it into a war on immigration. Members of the Immigration Reform Caucus and writers in National Review have tried to hitch their anti-immigration agenda to legitimate concerns about border security in our post-9-11 world. But ââ¬Å"border controlâ⬠and immigration are two separate issues. The problem is not that we are letting too many people in but that the federal government has not been doing enough to keep the wrong people outâ⬠Philips and Susan Martin stressed that The federal government immediately made some immigration changes in response to the terrorist attack, such as holding foreigners who violate immigration laws 48 hours without charge, up from 24 hours. But the Bush administration is seeking more immigration changes, and the new Homeland Security Council, with 100 staff members comparable in size to the National Security Council staff, is likely to suggest even more as the 46 federal agencies whose work it coordinates to fight terrorism review the processes of issuing visas to foreigners, controlling their entry into the US, and ensuring that they abide by the terms of their visas inside the US. Immigration policy reforms can not prevent terrorism, but they are a key part of any effort to combat terrorism. Immigration policies aim to facilitate the entry of wanted foreigners, and to identify and deter the entry of terrorists and other unwanted foreigners. This paper outlines the immigration reforms that could help prevent the entry of future terrorists. It would be unfair and self-destructive to blame Americaââ¬â¢s immigration policy for what happened on September 11. Immigrants come to live and work and build a better life for themselves and their families. The terrorists did not come here as immigrants. They entered the country on temporary non-immigrant tourist and student visas. They didnââ¬â¢t apply to the INS for green cards or any other kind of permanent status. Immigrants are only a small subset of the much larger pool of 30 million foreign nationals who enter the United States in a typical year. More than 95 percent enter as tourists or business travelers. Only 3 percent, or about one million, enter to immigrate, that is, to settle here permanently. We could reduce immigration to zero and it would do nothing for our national security. (Griswold, 2002) 9/11 Terrorism Attacks. (2017, May 03).

An analysis of an aspect of human culture from an anthropological Essay
An analysis of an aspect of human culture from an anthropological viewpoint - Essay Example It has further fostered the subordination of poor and developing nations by the rich and developed nations of the western world. This has lead to an environmental degradation and is regarded as a serious threat to non ââ¬â western indigenous cultures and economies. This article further argues that the Western countries has set up international bodies like IMF, World Bank, United Nations and other donor agencies to control all major economic and political affairs prevailing in the rest of the world. This papers approaches this issue from the holistic and anthropological perspective which surrounds the economic and non ââ¬â economic factors at the same time. Let us refer to the works of the famous economist and anthropologist Karl Marx. This great thinker anticipated disturbances and imbalances associated with the unfettered expansion of the global capital. According to Marx, societies go from simple to complex in a number of steps. The pre ââ¬â historic human culture of th e Aborigines was at a lower evolutionary stage than the Western ââ¬â European civilization. Similarly, during the cold war between communism and capitalism, the two opposite developing strategies were some form of Central planning and Western economics. Here, the Western developed economic nations with their capitalist approach managed to destroy the so called communist approach which were prevalent in the then U.S.S.R.

Advocacy in In Contempry America Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Advocacy in In Contempry America - Essay Example On July 27, 2007, Donald Rumsfeld is alleged to have written a memo to Condoleezza Rice concerning the situation in Iraq. The memo reveals that Condoleezza and Rumsfeld had discussed Iraq on numerous occasions (Doc4utv, 2014). The memo in ââ¬ËThe Unknown Knownââ¬â¢ also reveals that the initial goal of Rumsfeld was to weaken Saddam Hussein. The allegation, according to ââ¬ËThe Unknown Known,ââ¬â¢ is that Saddam was in possession of nuclear weapons that threatened global security. Back to ââ¬ËThe Standard Operating Procedure,ââ¬â¢ Morris seems to bring a connection between the two films by connecting Rumsfeld with the planning and execution of the Iraqi war. The visit of Rumsfeld to the prison in Iraq, where US soldiers resided, shows that Rumsfeld was trying to collect intelligence about the state of Iraq and how to weaken the influence of Saddam Hussein (Solplatform.org, 2014). This further indicates the relationship between Rumsfeldââ¬â¢s snowflakes and the photographs from Abu Ghraib. The prison visited by Rumsfeld in Iraq, as is indicated in ââ¬ËThe Standard Operating Procedure,ââ¬â¢ was to be used for the detention of suspected terrorists and any other parties that seemed to threaten the strategy of the US forces. Morris demonstrates a list of hundreds of memos written by Rumsfeld about Iraq. This is aà depiction of the interest that the secretary of defense had for Iraq and his revulsion for Saddam Hussein. In ââ¬Ëthe Standard Operating Procedure,ââ¬â¢ Morris demonstrates that the invasion of Iraq by the US and the torture of the suspected Iraqi terrorists started immediately after the departure of Rumsfeld from the country. This demonstrates the connection that the secretary of defense had with the Iraqi war. It also confirms the subject of his memos in ââ¬ËThe Unknown Known,ââ¬â¢ where his main intention was to attack Iraq and bring down the authority of Saddam Hussein. This also emphasizes
